Following a huge success of DARK from the German creators Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, Netflix is excited to continue this journey with them. 1899 will be the pair's first new series under their multiple-year overall deal with Netflix.
Though the series was officially confirmed at the end of 2018, soon after the season 1 of DARK, Baran bo Odar posted the 1st draft written by Jantje Friese for the Pilot episode 'The Ship'.
The pair is set to create and produce '1899' which is a historical horror series which highlights a steamship with migrants from London to New York during the transition from one century to another.
“At its heart (of this show) is the question of what unites us and what divides us. And how fear can be a trigger for the latter,” Friese and bo Odar said in a statement.
1899 is mostly a mix of europian migrants hoping to have a better future in New York in the new world. The story is about how their lives take a turn when they discover another migrant ship adrift on the open sea.
This series will be multi-language, with an international cast. To be mentioned, the plot of 1899 has nothing to do with Dark...but the thing is that 1899 will be dark and horrifying.
“What they find on board will turn their passage to the promised land into a horrifying nightmare,” - Netflix
